50 Publications Paying for Personal Essays

Longreads is dedicated to finding and sharing the best longform nonfiction storytelling on the web. We look for smart, unexpected angles and compelling voices across a wide range of topics. Their personal essay rate is $500. Check their submission guidelines here.

The New York Times has a column called ‘Modern Love’. The editors of Modern Love are interested in receiving deeply personal essays about contemporary relationships, marriage, dating, parenthood, any subject that might reasonably fit under the heading. Modern Love only accepts submissions during two windows per year: September–December and March–June. Pay is around $300. Submission details here.

Business Insider welcome pitches of personal essays year round. Their best advice for deciding what to pitch: Read the site. Get a feel for the types of stories they run. Don’t pitch stories we’ve already written. Be creative, and use a Business Insider-style headline in the subject line of your email. Business Insider generally pay $230+, but rates vary by section. Guidelines here.

Motherwell is a publication that tells all sides of the parenting story. They accept personal essays and there are paid opportunities for selected, featured content—either personal essays or perspective pieces. Generally pays around $50. Keep an eye on their page on Submittable for submission themes.

The Sun Magazine publishes personal essays, short stories, poems, and black-and-white photography in print and online in a monthly magazine. Pays $200 and up for personal essays, based on length. Submission guidelines here.

Let me guess: you’re juggling some form of pitching, client outreach, invoicing, expenses, some actual work and… about 40 open tabs? 50? It’s not uncommon for me to open so many that my laptop sounds like it’s trying to take off.

Finding a tool that actually matches how writers work has been a total pain. Some of them are expensive. They’re almost always confusing, and take so much time and energy to learn that you just switch off.

So instead of trying to find the perfect tool, I built one.

Finnygook (which you can try for free) is the business OS I made for writers like me, and hundreds of you are already using it. It started as a solution to my chaotic workspace, and it turns out a lot of you find it useful in exactly the same way.

Here’s how it fits into my actual week.

Pitching and following up

I’m still pitching freelance features and doing cold client outreach throughout the week. It’s part of how I work, and honestly, it keeps me sharp. How can I run a newsletter about freelance writing if I’m not actually freelance writing, after all?

I use Finnygook’s pitches section to log every outreach and track where each one sits.

I didn’t want this outreach to just sit in a web app you have to check constantly, which is why its daily digest email are so helpful. Every morning, I get a list of pitches and client outreach I need to chase.

More than 50% of my commissions come from work I’ve followed up on. That’s not a stat I looked up; it’s just true from my own experience. The follow-up reminder has been huge in actually helping me.

If you’re not following up (I always send two: one after a week, one after two weeks) then you’re probably leaving money on the table. Yes, you’ll get rejected a lot. But you only need to push for one commission to make a real difference.

Projects and tasks

With a million different things on the go, it’s very easy to lose track of what needs doing next. I use Finnygook to create projects, link to individual tasks, and set email reminders and sync straight to my Google Calendar.

It sounds simple. Because it is simple.

You track everything that needs doing, and get reminded when things are due, or when you’re falling behind.

I can stay organized and on top of everything I need for editors and clients, and tasks have stopped slipping through the cracks. (Pitch tracking is free on Finnygook, by the way.)

As someone who is neurodivergent, and constantly losing track of notebooks and sticky notes, this has been a real game changer for me.

Expenses and invoicing

I’m also tracking work-based expenses in Finnygook, which helps me keep on top of what I do and don’t need (like a useless LinkedIn Premium account, which I definitely didn't need to be spending money on each month).

Invoicing is probably my favorite feature, and the way it works makes it feel obvious. I’ve uploaded my billing and payment details, and get Finnygook to create an invoice in seconds… which I then send straight to my clients via the app.

I don’t even have to download it (though I can if I need to).

I use separate accounting software too, and the two work well alongside each other. Between them, I feel in control of the money side in a way I genuinely didn’t before.

Events and reminders

I am, by my own admission, notorious for missing webinars. Just ask literally anyone who’s run something I’ve signed up for.

I’ll sign up with good intentions and then completely forget they exist. Since I started setting events in Finnygook and getting same-day reminders pushed to my calendar, I actually show up to things. The ones worth showing up to, anyway.

Why is it working for me?

Well, being neurodivergent comes with its own difficulties. But even aside from that, I know we writers love a tool we can use to help us stay on top of everything.

Finnygook creates a system that tells me what’s next without making me think too hard about it. So far it’s replaced: three different apps, a document and a spreadsheet I constantly forgot to update, and a lot of mental energy I was wasting keeping track of things that I shouldn’t have to.

Chicken Soup for the Soul – Miracles, Messages & Angels
The world-famous anthology series, now seeking true first-person stories and poems about miracles, angels, messages from heaven, premonitions, and unexplainable but positive events. 1,200 words maximum; stories can be serious, humorous, or both. Publishing credits include an author biography.
Payment: $200-$250 per accepted piece.
Deadline: 1 June, 2026.

Chicken Soup for the Soul – Cat Stories
True first-person stories and poems (up to 1,200 words) celebrating the unique, endearing, and sometimes bewildering personalities of cats. Stories can be heartwarming, funny, or both. Simultaneous submissions to other Chicken Soup themes accepted.
Payment: $200-$250 per accepted piece.
Deadline: 1 June, 2026.

Eternal Haunted Summer – Summer Solstice 2026
An online ezine dedicated to original poetry and short fiction rooted in the world’s many Pagan, polytheist, and mythological traditions. This Solstice issue has a specific theme — see their submissions page for the 2026 prompt. Poetry and short fiction accepted; no previously published work online or in print.
Payment: $5 per accepted piece.
Deadline: 1 June, 2026.

Breath & Shadow
A quarterly literary publication by and for writers with disabilities — one of the longest-running of its kind. Accepts fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and drama on any subject; nonfiction articles and essays must relate to disability. Maximum of two submissions per issue; 3,000 words max per piece. Work does not need to be about disability for poetry and fiction.
Payment: $25 per poem or short prose; $40 per fiction or nonfiction piece.
Deadline: 1 June, 2026.

The Forge Literary Magazine
A respected online literary journal publishing one prose piece per week, selected by rotating editors reading all submissions anonymously. Accepts literary fiction and creative nonfiction; strongly prefers stories under 3,000 words though will consider up to 3,500. Free submissions open on the 1st of each month and close when the 200-submission monthly cap is reached — submit at the start of the month.
Payment: $100 per accepted piece, regardless of length.
Deadline: 1 June, 2026 (closes when cap of 200 is reached).

Okay Donkey
A beloved online literary magazine publishing one piece every Friday, alternating between flash fiction and poetry. Seeks the odd, off-kilter, and weird — funny, sad, experimental, surreal, and genre-bending. Submit one flash fiction (up to 1,200 words) or one poem (fits on one page) per submission period. Free submissions open June 1 and close when cap is reached.
Payment: $20 honorarium per published piece.
Deadline: 1 June, 2026 (closes when monthly cap is reached).

Knowing rates helps writers weigh up whether an outlet is worth their time, helps negotiate with confidence, and makes the whole industry a little fairer.

For one reason or another, many outlets don’t publish what they pay. Many editors don’t volunteer them. If you’ve followed the newsletter for a while, you’ll know I’m constantly asking for publications and editors to share their specific rates.

Sadly, many of the databases that used to help writers with this are largely inactive or out of date.

So we’re building our own.

Rates, payment timelines, how long it took to get the money. All the stuff that actually helps you decide whether a pitch is worth your time.

It only works if we all do our bit. The more writers who can contribute, the more useful it becomes for everyone — including you. And if you’re worried about privacy: all submissions are completely anonymous. No one will know what you earned, who you worked with, or what you thought.
