That makes 120+ already this week, which is another really promising start for paid writing work.

Worth remembering though: calls for opportunities and job postings aren’t the only way to find clients.

Some FWN members use these roundups differently. Not just to apply, but as a reference list. By seeing who’s hiring writers, you can note them down and cold pitch them later. It’s much easier cold pitching someone once you know they already work with writers.

So it’s worth keeping in mind: writers still find success by approaching potential clients directly, and by reconnecting with people they’ve worked with before. Being a writer isn’t only about spotting a job call early and getting your application in before someone’s inbox is completely overwhelmed with applicants.

See you again soon!

~ George

What’s in today’s edition?

Among today’s new opportunities…

Pitch calls are open across nature, travel, culture, parenting, history, ecology, yoga, and art criticism. Hiring managers & editors are just opening their inboxes, and you get to arrive right at the top of it by pitching or applying at the right moment.

It looks like lots of opportunities are still coming through. We’re sharing well over 200 a week right now which, given all current AI debacle, is a great sign for the future.

AI raises the floor for writing, but it creates such generic slop that it should be easy for working, professional writers to rise above it. So a top tip: don’t use it to pitch or write with! Trust me, everyone can tell. writers, social media sits somewhere between “I know I should probably do this” and “I can’t think of anything worse than this.”

Maybe you’ve posted consistently for a while and seen no benefit. Maybe LinkedIn feels full of people sharing what tragedy taught them about B2B sales. Maybe Instagram, X, TikTok or Threads all feel like another job that gets in the way before you can get on with your actual writing.

But avoiding social media entirely can mean missing a valuable source of visibility, relationships and, crucially, potential assignments.

The right social strategy doesn’t have to involve becoming an influencer, posting constantly, or trying to be everywhere at once. Instead, it’s about making it easier for the right editors, clients and fellow writers to find you, understand what you do, and remember you when an opportunity comes up.

That is what Kathryn will cover in our next live session for FWN members.

What Kathryn Will Cover

This session will help you learn to use social media as a practical part of your writing business, without letting it take over your entire week:

Why avoiding social media can be a missed opportunity for your freelance business (and how even a simple presence can create visibility over time)

How to build a recognisable professional brand online, while networking in a way that’s useful, not just performative

Turning conversations into opportunities: real-world strategies for using comments, connections and interactions to land assignments

Choosing the platforms that make sense for your target market, rather than spreading yourself thin across every new app

Tips for batching, scheduling and planning social content so it supports your writing work instead of distracting you from it

For writers, social media is often a vague, never-ending task: another feed to have to keep up with, another space to constantly compare yourself to others, another thing on top of your never ending to-do list.

But used well, it can become a marketing channel that keeps working while you are focused on client work.

The goal is to build a system that helps the right people see your work, understand your value, and know where they can get in touch.

Whether you are completely new to using social media professionally, have been posting without a clear strategy, or want to make your current efforts more efficient, this session is designed to give you a more focused, sustainable approach.

Kathryn will make social media feel less like a demand to build a personal brand, and more like what it can actually be: a practical way to grow your freelance business, meet people, and create more opportunities for paid work.

How to Join

As you’re currently on the free plan, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid membership to join us live (and get access to the recording afterwards, along with every other member perk).

Upgrade now & Those short, sharp stories usually under 1,000 words that pack a full narrative punch into a fraction of the space.

Don’t let the word count fool you: plenty of editors are willing to pay real money, from a few dollars to three-figures for a story that lands in a page or less.

We’ve included information on pay rates, word counts, themes and descriptors, submission fees (where they apply), and direct submission links. Everything you need to start sending your shortest, sharpest work out into the world and get paid for it.

Not sure if flash fiction is for you? Some are even paying the top rates for writing in this genre.

I’ve included pay rates, editorial guidelines, and submission links for every outlet, so you have everything you need to start pitching and land your next commission.

Never written literary criticism before? That’s fine, you don’t need a masters in comparative literature to have something worth saying. If you’ve ever finished a book and immediately wanted to talk someone’s ear off about it, argued with a friend over whether the ending worked, or noticed a trend across everything you’ve read this year, you already have the instinct these editors are looking for.

Reviews, essays, industry reporting, craft pieces, author profiles, there’s a home here for all of it.

This list is broad enough that just scrolling through might hand you your next idea. And because most of these outlets publish well beyond books too, you’ll likely spot a few new places worth pitching regardless of your usual beat.

If you have insights into specific pay rates, or if you’ve been offered different terms than those listed here, please let me know by replying to this email or by messaging me on Substack.

Missed any of our recent themed roundups?

We’ve got a growing database of publications that always want your pitches & submissions.

Want to Write About Family or Parenting? 41 Outlets That Pay

45 Publications Paying You to Write About Love, Sex & Relationships

30 Outlets Paying You to Write About Crime & Justice

18 Publications Commissioning Early‑Career Writers

Access all of our themed roundups here!

37 Publications Paying for Writing About Books, Publishing, & Literary Criticism

Harper’s Magazine is one of the oldest and most prestigious general-interest magazines in the United States, founded in 1850.
