Well said, AI has no place in writing. The fact that “writers” are using it for pitching is shameful. Use your brains.

I love hearing this because it makes me realize that AI can’t take our jobs.

I believe the best way to use AI content is an example. Then write it in your own words. You make very good points on AI taking most used and popular content to spit out content for you. It only has our collective human experiences for reference.

How to use AI to become a better writer 👏🏽 is my next request.

Why can't you just become a better writer? This is not a comment on you as a writer. I have no idea if you're good or not. But if you want to improve, just improve.

That’s exactly why colleges and courses exist, Charlie....to educate.

I was offering a more constructive perspective for readers, because the negativity around AI ultimately won’t change its trajectory. It’s already here, and it’s not going anywhere. It’s generating billions of dollars, which means it will continue to evolve regardless of personal preference.

If history has taught us anything, it’s that the people who resist new technology often end up using it once it becomes widely adopted. Hence the smart phone you type on. When the masses move, the culture follows.

So instead of focusing only on how not to use AI, it’s just as important to discuss how to use it effectively and responsibly.

I understand all the arguments regarding AI. I'm a software engineer. I know how it works, and why people use it, and what its potential is.

I'd rather see AI companies focusing on that potential in the sciences and medicine than in the creative arts, where it has no place. You will find that resistance to this will continue. People who resist writing in the arts are not Luddites.

Note, too, that the Supreme Court has already declared generative AI public domain art. You do not own copyright when creating AI art. It's all in the public domain now. The same will likely be true for AI writing once a similar case on regarding writing.

AI can't make you a better writer. It can make you a better researcher, as long as you verify, and it can certainly help you become a better and faster software engineer/coder if you use it correctly. But it cannot help you become a better writer. When I use Grammarly, if I accept all its recommendations, it would turn my writing to shit.

Even if it didn't, it wouldn't make me a better writer. Only practicing the craft does that.I become a better writer by writing. And reading.

Maybe I can find a way to use AI to add a comment to the correct part of a thread, lol, which I did not do when I tried replying to this from my phone.

Yes, you make some great points. I totally agree with you. All of this would make great content for folks. Sometimes we need a good kick in the butt when we are using this tool to be be lazy.

Great points Charles.

I meant to write, "Those of us who resist AI writing in the arts are not Luddites. Substack's phone app doesn't let me edit. I guess I should use AI for my comments!

Thank you for posting about this growing problem. We are also considering changes in our submission process to reduce the time wasted on AI slop, but for now are hoping real human writers with true stories to share will still find us.
