đ Pitch Calls
FEMINISM: The Flytrapâs pitching window for freelance writers is opening soon for stories in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026. The Flytrap is a media collective focused on feminist cultural criticism that responds to and engages with cultural phenomena, rejecting algorithmic editorial strategies. They are looking for unflinching, occasionally provocative, but always engaging and values-driven work. And a reminder that they only accept pitches through our pitching form, not through email. Pays a minimum of $1000. Tons of great info here.
SCIENCE: The Verge is open to new pitches. The Verge covers the ways that technology and science are changing the way we live. Their stories go through a collaborative and thorough editorial process, and writers are paid at competitive rates (which varies between the $0.33-$1/word range).
COMMUNITY: New Public is looking for great pitches and better writers. âHave something to say about community stewardship, local online groups, alternative social media, civic health and clubs, or the intersection of journalism and social media?â They typically pay $500 for a complete newsletter draft.
WOMENâS HEALTH: Flow Space is actively seeking pitches for reported features and first-person essays focused on the health and wellness of midlife women (ages 35â65). âWomenâs health has been historically underserved, with the majority of research investment focused on the male brain and body, ignoring female biology. Flow Space offers the latest science and most resonant stories to inform and empower women to advocate for their own wellbeing.â You can pitch to Emily, an Editor, at ecegielski@shemedia.com. Will pay $200 and up, with some of the most deeply reported features paying up to $800.
SECRET LIVES: "Secret Lives" is one of Narrativelyâs most popular ongoing series, and one for which theyâre always looking for new stories. The series includes both reported profiles and first-person essays, and is defined by stories that bring readers into a slice of life they normally wouldnât have access to. There has to be something at stake, something universal and human thatâs being unraveled and examined. The most successful âSecret Livesâ stories draw the reader in thinking that they have nothing in common with the writer or subject, and by the end leaves them feeling connected to their experience in a way they never imagined possible. Their other open submission pays $300, so this is presumably similar.
GAMING: Stop Caring is an attitude based on the idea that videogames are valid and sophisticated artistic expressions, filled with as much cultural sinew as any other art-form. It's about taking the lessons we can learn from gaming and implementing them in our daily lives. It's about taking all of this shit less seriously, but discussing games with the same gravitas one would use when examining any work of art. They are open to pitches, and pay $100-$200 for commissioned work. More details here.
MINING, AFRICA: The China-Global South Project (CGSP) is seeking individuals (journalists, researchers, and subject matter experts) that are motivated and passionate about mining activities in Africa, particularly those related to critical minerals. CGSP is building an interactive map that follows Chinaâs presence in the critical minerals in Africa. For this project, CGPS has covered five countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Guinea. They are seeking contributions in the form of analyses, reports, and impact stories that explore how mining activities are affecting local communitiesâboth positively and negatively. Details here, will pay âvariedâ rates. Unsure how much.
MUSIC: ANTICS is open for Issue 4 pitches. They want: Interviews with emerging artists and a variety of other ideas linked to music. Looks like they want hot takes, unique ideas or niche artists, rather than your more established performers. Tons of info in this link. Pays between $50 and $250.
LIFESTYLE & CULTURE, UK: Maybelle at i News has shared a new thread of examples of recently commissioned work and that she is open to new pitches. This will pay in the ÂŁ250 range, according to reports from writers.
PARENTING: Motherwell is currently open for submissions, and the two topics they want right now focus on what keeps us up at night as parents and what it means to navigate our identities and life changes as kids get older. Paid opportunities for selected, original articles (unclear on amount).
PARENTING: Motherwell is also looking for evocative first-person narratives that have a unique focus, or take a novel angle, on a slice of the parenting experience. We are open to a range of styles and tones: the only requirement is that the essay works on its own termsâbe it lyrical, humorous, research-oriented, etcâand conveys something fundamental about its writer. Paid opportunities for selected, original articles (unclear on amount).
I shared 30 pitch calls in total this week, and youâre only seeing a third of that right now. You can access all of them by upgrading to paid today!
