Chris Hatler at Men’s Journal is looking for more pitches about whisky. $250 flat rate for 600-800 words. Will prioritize snappy headlines and unique opinions.
Briony at Louder is on the hunt for new writers. “I am particularly interested in hearing from *new* and aspiring writers who may still be developing their voice, from backgrounds typically underrepresented by the alternative music press.” Generally pays around £0.10/word.
The Objective is an American publication that examine systems of power and inequity in journalism. They are open to freelance pitches, particularly related to the recent election. Guide here. $0.50/word.
Are you someone with a story to tell? Did you go through a harrowing divorce? A friend break-up that broke your heart? Or maybe you have a parenting story you want to share? “I am now open and taking pitches of all kinds for personal essays. Around 500-1,000 words are preferred but not required. This is paid. GB Digital is looking for experienced writers with bookkeeping or accounting expertise. If you have experience writing about bookkeeping or accounting or even better: have experience WORKING as a bookkeeper or accountant (CPA credentials are a huge plus!) then they want to hear from you. FERN and High Country News are collaborating on a special project on the subject of food and power in the West and are currently conducting an open call for pitches for short form essays and reportage on this theme from a state or a local perspective. Good Food Movement is seeking original, data-driven stories about food, farming, climate, and sustainable living from the Indian subcontinent. “We're also interested in visual storytellers – submit your photo essays that capture the essence of good food. We offer ₹8000 for original reporting and photo stories, ₹6000 for original interviews, and will also cover travel and accommodation (if agreed in advance).

Off Assignment is a literary magazine with a penchant for journeys and a fascination with strangers. “We’re looking for writers who travel, poets who wander, essayists with a sense of place, reporters with swollen notebooks, and gourmands with street cart taste.” Loads of info about these categories here, but Off Assignment pays $300 for “Letter to a Stranger,” “No Equivalent,” and “Under the Influence” essays. We pay $100 for “Witching Hour” essays.
Ethan has shared a regular callout for pitches for the Globe and Mail's business opinion section. “Pitch me at elou@globeandmail.com. For reference, these are the pieces that have run in my section.” Rates never shared but they paid around $0.38/word a few years ago (this has likely changed, unclear to what).
