Pitch Calls
Paige is looking for anyone who has gone from working in corporate US -> corporate in another country and is interested in writing about surprising differences for Business Insider. “DM me some quick details (where/differences) + we can go from there! Rates start at $230 for 600 words.”
MIT Technology Review is seeking pitches for an upcoming print issue. The theme is Security. “We're looking for pitches for longer pieces: narrative features, compelling investigations, essential profiles, and super-sharp essays. This call for pitches is mostly aimed at journalists, but if you're an expert with a strong idea, please don't hesitate to reach out.” The pitch deadline is Friday April 4th. Pay between $1-2/word.
Motley Bloom is looking for pitches for their May digital theme: confronting shame, stigma, and misconceptions. “What ideas about neurodivergence do you want to challenge? What new narratives do you want to write? Let’s hear em! We’re looking for essays, reviews, first-person narratives, and reported stories that bust myths and shatter misconceptions about neurodivergence.” Pays $300-$500, depending on the length. Deadline April 11th.
Take Back the Tech is seeking proposals & pitches for stories, analysis + collective experiences that address digital stalking from an intersectional feminist lens. Send a pitch (300 words) to genderit_editions@apc.org. Pays $500.
James is an editor of the luxury lifestyle magazine Cloud (the exclusive lifestyle magazine from Air Charter Service, is all about inspiring you to indulge in specialist interests that broaden your horizons) which can be viewed here. He is now accepting pitches for issue 33. Have asked re rates.
Arielle at The Baffler is open to pitches on: “Gaza coverage, book reviews, weird things happening online, Chinese literature in translation, reviews of things that could plausibly be called Asian-American lit, dispatches from the post-metoo-feminismscape, critiques of zionism are always welcome.” All contributions are paid, starts at $500.
For Business Insider, Frank is looking for first-person essay pitches from people who landed jobs thanks to their parents. “Did you use your parent's connections? Did they apply to jobs for you? How did they help you navigate the difficult job market? Are you embarrassed about it, or do you have no shame? Stories from the parent’s perspective are also welcomed. Pitch at folito@businessinsider.com.” Rates will be about $230.
ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. “While the vast majority of ProPublica’s work comes from our staff, we occasionally consider supporting ambitious accountability stories or projects from independent journalists whose ideas align with the mission of our organization.” Pays, but unclear how much.
EHRP seeks reported pieces and first-person essays on the economic fall-out of the Executive Orders that target communities, federal jobs and funding for social services among so many other facets of American life. Grants for personal essays range from $750–1,500, depending on your experience and the amount of reporting involved. First-time contributors to EHRP typically receive $750.
For Business Insider, Jess is looking to publish a few personal essays from people with moving regrets. “Whether you moved recently or years ago, whether it's a sad or happy ending, I want to hear your story. Send your pitch with a clear BI-friendly headline and 3-5 sentences explaining the focus of your piece to jorwig@businessinsider.com.” Will be around $230.
Stephanie is currently looking for freelance pitches on the following topics: Ferry trips, Flight and cruise upgrades, Retirement travel, Moving to/from the US. For Business Insider. Rates start at $200 for 600 words, no deadline.

Lindsey Botts is one of the editors at Sierra magazine. “I help the magazine come up with a rich mix of stories that capture the wide world that is the environmental movement. I love being outdoors and working with writers. Feel free to pitch me.” Sierra pays around $1.50/word for work published online.
Apartment Therapy is looking for pitches. “Homeowners and renters are facing new and unexpected challenges due to climate change. We're hoping to dig a little deeper for an upcoming series on climate by telling stories about how homeownership and renting have changed in a world more prone to extreme, deadly, and damaging climate events. We’re looking for personal, but data-driven, stories from people who live in an area, or have bought a home, that’s been affected by climate change.” Starts at $150.
Arts Midwest is seeking engaging, people-centered stories that showcase the power of creative action across their coverage region—especially from Greater Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Selected pitches will be contracted for 500-word written articles. $500 compensation. Deadline April 6th.
The Logic is one of Canada’s leading sources of business and technology news. “We publish in-depth reporting on the businesses, people and policies that are moving the country forward. We’re always looking for pitches from freelance journalists. We prioritize reporting, but will consider pitches for fact-based essays that engage with a newsworthy idea or issue. We will consider pitches for excerpts from forthcoming books on business and technology.” Usually pays $1/word. Details here.

Dirt just launched a new books newsletter, BLANK, and is looking for pitches from freelance writers. They’re looking for smart essays on books and the culture around them, interviews and short fiction. Standard essay rates start at $0.50/word, negotiable for reported pieces. Q&As are paid out at $250.

Burning Phoenix Press is a small comic press dedicated to bringing the stories of Black women to life. “Black women from all over the world, cis and trans, are welcome to submit no matter their comic experience. We will be accepting seven stories (8-10 pages, black and white or color). The age rating for the comic is 14+. Submissions will be open until May 10th.”
Are you a practicing planner, scholar, or work in a related field? Planitzen is always accepting pitches for feature articles that bring an expert lens to today's key planning issues. Pays writers $500 per article.
Pitches for I Have That On Vinyl are open. “Here are some things I’m looking for: personal narrative essays about a specific record, about collecting vinyl, about your favorite record store or why you buy variants or how you came to love a certain record. I want stories about your first purchase or your first visit to a record store. I want to hear about your passion for vinyl, for music, for collecting. I want odd stories about novelty records, and lamentations on greatest hits volumes and box sets.” Pays $20.
Phano is looking for fiction and nonfiction ( 1-5k words) that points to how things might be, could be, should be. They pay 2 cents per word. Guidelines here.
queerbeat is an online magazine focused on deeply and accurately covering LGBTQIA+ persons in India. They’re looking for pitches on: What role does masculinity play in the lives of trans men & trans masc folks, butch women & nonbinary persons? “We are looking for under-reported stories advancing the conversation about masculinity—its presence, performance, and possibilities.” More details here.
Room Magazine invites unpublished writing on any theme for an open issue 48.4, edited by Sadie Graham, Natasha Gauthier, Fran Pacchiano, and Chimedum Ohaegbu. “Without prescription or limitation, we want to see your best work. Work that takes risks, with language that surprises. Lately we’ve been thinking about: urgency, and the failure to be urgent; mistakes; complicity; consequences; the texture and feeling of the present; the lingering of the past; Afrosurrealism; Indigenous futurism; what the world will look like when Palestine is free; critical Canadiana, grounded in place, amid this surge of nationalism; feel-bad fiction, formal poetry, deeply-researched essays, and hybrid forms.”
CITE invites experienced journalists and documentary filmmakers in Zimbabwe to pitch impactful investigative stories promoting accountability, transparency and media reporting excellence. Selected Applicants will receive a story grant of up to $1000 USD.

Are you estranged from family? Do you have a story to tell about it? Jenny Bartoy, editor of the anthology NO CONTACT, forthcoming from Catapult (April 2026), is seeking personal essays and flash nonfiction around this topic. Full guidelines here. All contributors will be paid a fee (minimum $50 flash nonfiction / $100 essay). Deadline April 1st.
Call for pitches: prospective Education About Asia authors are invited to submit a 250-word abstract for feature articles, teaching resource essays or multimedia content. Pitches received by May 1, 2025 will be considered for the spring 2026 issue.
Trails Magazine is looking for pitches for Issue 11. The themes are ‘Connection’. Ryan, an editor at Trails, has shared lots of useful pitch information here. Pays $0.50/word minimum. Deadline is some time in May for Issue 11.
Now in its 16th year, the C New Critics Award is designed to help identify, develop, and promote the work of emerging art critics, and to encourage creative discourse on current art practices. Writers are invited to submit an 800-1,000 word review of a recent exhibition, performance, publication, or moving image work, by May 30, 2025. The winner will receive $750, editorial support to prepare their article for publication in a future issue of C Magazine, and a two-year subscription. All participants will receive a one-year subscription.
Open Secrets Magazine is currently accepting submissions of unpublished first person 1,000-2,000 word personal essays written entirely by the author without use of AI and based on the author’s life experience relating to climate change and/or cliimate issues. Deadline: May 31, 2025. Pays $50.
