Hello!

It’s lovely to be back home again. I’ve been on holiday abroad for the last couple nights and it’s been great to enjoy some nice weather - sadly I’ve not seen a lot of that this summer!

Everything will be completely back to normal from the start of next week, with these opportunities sent to you again on Tuesday. I only got back home yesterday evening so I’ve been unable to put together the newsletter until today.

On with the opportunities, lots to check out as always this week! 20 pitch calls and 20 freelance or remote writing jobs.

Calls to Pitch

  • Atlas Obscura has two main sections: Places (a.k.a. “the Atlas”) and Stories, our home for reported articles and features. They have recently updated pitch guidelines for freelancers. They publish a lot — features, columns, food stories, recipes, profiles, etc. — but all of it should be deeply rooted in a sense of place and strengthen their position as the definitive guide to all of the unique, extraordinary, and surprising wonders of the world. Pays $0.50/word.

  • MIT Technology Review is at the beginning stages of planning their March/April 2025 issue. The theme is Relationships. “We’re looking for big swings on that general theme: narrative features, essential profiles, investigations, and sharp essays to go in the feature well of the magazine. As always, we are looking for stories that have a technology angle.” $1-$2 per word.

  • Hyphen is looking for pitches. “If you've got a story or an idea on an issue that you reckon would be of interest to British Muslims, please email me on ramzy dot alwakeel at hyphenonline dot com.” Rates have been £0.30-£0.50/word in the past.

  • SISTER: STEM folks, what’s on your mind as you return for this academic year? “We’re looking for essays and op-eds on student protests, COVID, and more. Let us share your voice!” $125 per piece.
