Hello and welcome!

There are 54 opportunities in total to check out this week, with tons of great pitch calls plus freelance and remote writing roles across the globe!

I’m deeply sorry to hear of so many layoffs in the industry recently, especially so close to Christmas. This newsletter gets shared for free every Wednesday, so please do feel free to share with those you feel might find it of use.

I’ve shared posts on social media too, so please consider retweeting my tweet or reposting on Bluesky.

Calls to Pitch

  • Jess at Guardian US is back from leave and looking for: researched pitches for long form narratives [an arc! a story! characters! intrigue!]; essays [searing, searching, funny]; stories about gray areas and hard choices; people that give us hope; a sense of place. Rates have been $0.50-$1/word in the past, though you would need to confirm with the editor.

  • Hannah Raskin is founder of The Food Section, a daily newsletter covering culinary news and culture across the South—and catering to an appetite for independent, rigorous, and ethical food journalism that puts readers’ interests first. Hannah is open to your freelance pitches. Pay is a very specific $1058.16 per feature!

  • Sarah is the TV section editor at Public Books, and is open to your pitches! Submission guidelines here. Pay is around $150. You can send your pitches to Sarah at srkessle@usc.edu.

  • Conz is looking for essays about your best or worst family vacation and why for Insider. Things like a multigenerational trip and the pains of it. Traveling with little kids. Traveling with teens. A stranger helping your family out at the airport. Being separated from your kids on the plane. And more! Email pitches: cpreti@insider.com. Pay presumably around $230.

  • Conz would also love more pitches about independence (or the lack of) in kids today. Email is always open for submissions: cpreti@insider.com. Pay presumably $230 again.
