Welcome back to the Freelance Writing Network. It’s been lovely to take a couple of weeks off completely - even if I was taken down by illness at the start of January!
We’re now completely back to normal, with 60 opportunities this week including 23 pitch calls from editors and 37 remote or freelance writing roles worldwide.
It’s a solid start to opportunities in 2025, though I’m hoping we’ll be seeing more as everyone gets back to work this January. It can sometimes be a quiet month, but I’ll be sharing with you as much as I possibly can as ever.

Calls to Pitch
Starlight is looking for smart (not academic), interesting (not just to you), and relevant (to a global audience) pitches to fill their winter/spring calendar. Hidden histories, health explainers, health debunkers, health trends, I wonder stories and more. TONS of info in this thread. Generally pays $1/word.
Alexis is always open to music pitches for Remezcla, but right now is looking for Black History Month stories by Afro Latine writers. $300 for features, $200 for listicles.
Isaac is the new digital editor at Muck (“We celebrate and explore independent culture; people and movements that paddle against the flow. We publish news, profiles, interviews, reportage, opinion pieces and photo essays across digital and print. We also commission original documentaries and films.”), and is open to pitches. No rates shared, but this page gives you an idea of what they’re looking for.
Maybelle at The i Paper has shared various pitch calls today for British freelancers, including private schools and expert led finance pieces. Pays £250 for 1000 words, this can rise depending on the project. Keep an eye on Maybelle’s feed for regular pitch calls as these do get taken quickly.
For his upcoming GAMEBOOK ADVANCE, Paul is looking for someone to write a paid retrospective on #TheLegendofZelda #MinishCap. The fee is £100 for 800-1000 words. Interested? Send a short pitch to pmurphy1978 (at) outlook (dotcom) before 12th Jan!
Bolts is always seeking to work with freelancers to report on critical voting rights and criminal justice stories across the United States. “We encourage pitches that fit our mission to grow coverage of the local and state politics, elections, policymaking, and organizing that shape these issues—think of county prosecutors and sheriffs, secretaries of state and local election administrators, state legislators, municipal officials, and the activism brewing around them.” Pays $800 as a default rate.
“I'm putting out a rare call for freelancers for Parents.com. This is specific: We want to do more first-person commerce stories, and since our own kids keep getting older, I'm particularly looking for writers with newborns through toddlers. Not looking for story pitches or PR, please. Just writers with relevant clips who are interested in assignments.”
Orion Magazine is looking for pitches for their Fall 25 issue on "Natural Rhythm: Tracing the ancestral roots of hip hop" (closes 15 Jan) Next, for their Winter 25 issue, they will be looking for pitches on "Not Yet Extinct: On the trail of Bigfoot and other survivors". bioGraphic is an independent, award-winning online magazine connecting you with stories about biodiversity and conservation from around the world. They are open to pitches. No rates yet. Have asked.
The focus of Trails is on backpacking and other human/naturally-powered means of sleeping outdoors: bikepacking, canoe camping, even things like rafting or mountaineering are fair game (feel free to be creative with those criteria—we covered “skatepacking” in Issue One). Issue Ten’s theme is ‘Efficiency’ and pitches are due February 2025. $0.50/word minimum. All details here.

“This is my regular callout for pitches for the Globe and Mail's business opinion section. Pitch me at elou@globeandmail.com. For reference, these are the pieces that have run in my section. A different editor at this publication had rates that were $300-$400 per piece, so presumably this is similar.
