Pitch Calls
Broccoli has opened their pitch call for Catnip Volume 2. “Ask a cat, and they’ll tell you: any time is the right time for more catnip. And here at Broccoli, we’re listening. It’s time to make Volume 2 of Catnip—our joyful, sweet, sometimes silly but always smart celebration of all things cat—and we’re looking for your cat tales.” $0.50/word, deadline February 26th.
Conz at BI is looking for essays from parents on the topic of their kids misbehaving. Do you feel bad about it? Do you feel like you did your job, and it's on them? Somewhere in between? Generally pays around $230.
Conz is also looking for pitches from parents who had kids in 2016ish and only have baby photos of their kids with filters — you know, the puppy ears filter, or the rosy cheeks one. Open to whether you love them, regret only taking photos with filters, wish you had taken more, etc. Same rates as above.
Are you estranged from family? Do you have a story to tell about it? Jenny Bartoy, editor of the anthology NO CONTACT, forthcoming from Catapult (April 2026), is seeking personal essays and flash nonfiction around this topic. Full guidelines here. All contributors will be paid a fee (minimum $50 flash nonfiction / $100 essay). Deadline April 1st.
Patrick is looking for writers to pitch to him about politics. “Profiles, scene dispatches, narrative reconstructions, unobserved trends, and always investigations — send them all my way! (If you’ve got a straight opinion take essay, I’m not your guy.)” Rates vary based on the amount of work a project requires.
Trails Mag is looking for backpacking food pitches! “Alignment with our threads (“efficiency” and “connection”) is great, but not critical. We need recipes as well as stories: Think a profile of a backcountry chef or a review of a unique piece of camp kitchen gear. Email stasia@trailsmag.net!” Features range anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 words or longer and we pay anywhere from $0.50 to $2/word. Full guidelines here.
Little White Lies is invested in beautiful films and the people that make them, and want to create and curate writing and illustration that reflects this. Hannah has recently shared a thread on Bluesky with more detail about what they are looking for. Pay is £0.17/word and they accept writers from anywhere.
Words of Mouth is putting together a book that explores the activity of looking for work through essays, interviews, and other text-based or visual ruminations. They have just shared the pitch call for this book. “It’s our hope that this conversation between people who seek, have, and give jobs will be the first of many inspired by the anthology.” Pays $350 and the deadline is March 1st.
Kitchen Work Issue #10 will be devoted to stories about Cities! “Please send us writing about markets, cafes, urban picnics, tiny kitchens, and big dinner tables in your favorite city.” Pays $0.20/word. The deadline to submit for kitchen work Issue #10 ‘Cities’ is March 15th.
Restart is looking for pitches related to GTA 6 and the wider GTA franchise (think retrospectives, rankings, etc.). The average rate is $200. Please send pitches and recent writing samples to hello@restart.run.
The Appeal is a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to exposing how the U.S. criminal legal system fails to keep people safe and perpetuates harm. “Our work shows the human and economic costs of our expansive carceral system, equips people with the tools to make change, and elevates solutions that seek to create a safer society without clinging to punitive responses.” They are open for pitches and pay writers $1/word.
Dennis is the higher ed editor for Public Books. “If you have something to get off your chest about higher ed, pitch me. Not looking for quick takes, but thoughtful scholarship and commentary that makes sense of our moment.”
Parapraxis is an all-volunteer magazine that publishes twice a year in print and semi-frequently on their website. Print Issues are themed. “We are actively seeking pitches for Issue 07: Romance (Winter 2025) and for our (un-themed) website, where we do not adhere to any theme. Pieces for web are on rolling deadlines; pieces for Issue 07 would be due in the spring.” Print rates vary depending on length from $500-800. Web rates are a flat $500.
The Forward is American Jewry’s essential, independent news organization, delivering incisive coverage of the issues, ideas and institutions that matter to American Jews with rigorous, unbiased reporting and balanced, thoughtful commentary on news, politics, arts and culture that are acclaimed in the news industry. The Foward is looking for freelance pitches and according to their website, pay highly competitively.
Fortunately is a post-capitalist lifestyle magazine that explores the intersections of art, culture, and solidarity economies and has shared a new call for pitches. “In Issue 02 of Fortunately Magazine, we explore forms of communal exchange and transfer for unprecedented times and uncertain futures. This issue probes how institutions influence our daily transactions, which range from the subtle to the explicit: a look across the room, a heated dialogue between conspirators, or the frenzy of the market.” $300+ with a deadline of March 17th.
Curationist seek proposals to publish new writing on their platform.
”Curationist’s editorial features critically investigate and contextualize the Works in open access archives. Writers build essays from the histories, narratives, and art of global cultures across time.” The ideal guest writer will have an interest in the history and contemporary context of cultural objects and materials. Pays $1500 with a deadline of March 30.Dan, EIC at VPN and How to Watch, is looking for some freelance tech writers – very much on the tech end of things – to write about VPNs. Leicester Gazette accepts pitches related to the city of Leicester from both established freelancers and new writers. Your pitch should be short, outlining the story's importance and why you are the one to write it. Keep it brief, well-structured and exciting. Pays £0.10/word.
The Winter 2025-26 issue of The Stinging Fly, due to publish in November 2025, will have a special focus on the climate crisis. “We now invite pitches for pieces of creative non-fiction engaging with this topic. Your pitch, which should be submitted through this form, should clearly outline what you wish to write about, how you intend to develop it, and what will make your essay effective, unique or compelling.” Pitches will be accepted until March 31st.

Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has shared a call for pitches for human rights features. HRCP invites narrative pitches from investigative reporters, legal analysts and human rights practitioners that explore rights-based problems: (a) Either through ‘untold’ human interest stories or (b) In the form of detailed but easily accessible explainers.
Minority Africa is looking for writers, journalists, & filmmakers who have an interest in reporting stories focused on minorities within the African continent. They pay between $100 – $200 for standard multimedia features.
Previous Pitch Calls With Deadlines
Gray Area seeks proposals for essays of 2,200–5,000 words for inclusion in the Whole Earth Redux print publication (a forthcoming print publication featuring contemporary writers responding to the Whole Earth Index). Contributors will receive editorial support and $450 in compensation. Selected writers will be notified by March 21 and will be expected to produce a draft by May 23.
Trails Magazine is looking for pitches for Issues 10 and 11. The themes for each issue are ‘Efficiency’ and ‘Connection’. Ryan, an editor at Trails, has shared lots of useful pitch information here. Pays $0.50/word minimum. Deadline for Issue 10 is Feb/March, some time in May for 11.
The Loveliest Review Offers a Bi-Annual Fellowship, starting in 2025, in the amount of $1,000 and digital publication. The 2025 theme is ‘justice’. Applications are open until April 1.
