Conz at Business Insider is looking for personal essays on the following topics: Being an older parent — how you feel about it, how your parents felt about it, etc. Kids being disruptive — you thought you had done everything right with your parenting, and your kid did something bad. Millionaires and relationships — is it hard to make friends? date? Names — looking for fresh angles on name changes, loving/hating your name, etc. Tesla/Cybertruck — are you selling/not yours? For Business Insider, Jess is looking to publish a few personal essays from military families. “Whether you grew up in a military home or you’re currently a parent in a military family, I want to hear your story. What are the struggles and benefits of living this life? Do you have any tips for other military families or lessons you’ve learned along the way that could help others? Send your pitch with a clear BI-friendly headline and 3-5 sentences explaining the focus of your piece to jorwig@businessinsider.com." Rates will be around $230.”
Stephanie is looking for hot-take essay pitches for BI! “Think short, 500-word pieces that get people talking. Rates start at $220. I accept pitches through DM or the link in my bio. No deadline to reach out.” Lots of good examples in the shared thread on Twitter.
Maybelle is on the hunt for interesting/useful pitches around consumer health (always uk only) for The i Paper. “Please check the site to see the kinds of things we cover before emailing at maybelle.morgan@theipaper.com.” This has paid £250 for 1000 word features in the past.
Clare has just joined The Times Magazine as acting features editor. If you want to pitch (or just say hi), you can contact clare.conway@thetimes.co.uk. No rates shared. This is a UK publication and is most likely looking for features from UK writers.
For Business Insider, Frank is looking for recent college grads (within the past five-ish years) who graduated with no job to write first-person essays. How did you feel? What were you worried about? What did you do? Who did you turn to? Will pay $250 for this work.
EHRP seeks reported pieces and first-person essays on the economic fall-out of the Executive Orders that target communities, federal jobs and funding for social services among so many other facets of American life. “Our grants for personal essays range from $750–1,500, depending on your experience and the amount of reporting involved. First-time contributors to EHRP typically receive $750.” Useful thread found here.
Barn Raiser is looking for new writers to pitch on topics that affect people in rural and small town America. Your ideas can be sent to editorial@barnraisingmedia.com. Lots of examples of what they are looking for in this thread. $500 for reported stories, $200 for opinion (typical length 1000-1200 words). Q+As or book reviews in between. Pitches accepted on a rolling basis.
Erin is looking for pitches for two verticals at New Lines Magazine to run in April, May and June. Deadline for pitches is March 31. “As ever, I'm looking for hard-hitting & enlightening reportage that touches on topics & places traditional outlets ignore. My primary beat is NORTH & WEST AFRICA & the diasporas of those places. I’m especially interested in stories from Algeria, Morocco, Mali & Mauritania. We are currently flush with stories about conflict, migration and climate change, so I’m looking for stories that touch on different, fresh topics and do it in a New Lines way.” Loads of info in this thread. Erin is also looking for pitches for Spotlight, a newsletter about underreported news and cultural trends from around the world. These short (~1600 words) pieces tackle the upswell of ideas/events before they go mainstream, or they untangle a hot topic in a new and fascinating way. This pays $600.
The Ex-Puritan is looking for long-form interviews that deeply engage readers, examine literary works, ask compelling questions, and challenge the boundaries of literature. “Our editorial focus is on contemporary literary work, but we are also interested in pieces that incorporate other disciplines and contemporary topics of conversation.” Loads of useful information here. $100 per interview, and they also pay for other work too.
Broad Sound is seeking pitches for thoughtful and creative engagement with Bruce Springsteen’s 1975 masterwork “Thunder Road,” the opening track off Born to Run. “We’re looking for analysis of the song both technical and personal. We’re looking for short fiction and poetry. We’re looking for quite literally any way you can think of to work with this incredible song. All that matters is that you have a unique angle on the work, one that distinguishes your pitch from the others.” This will pay $100.
Aeon is a digital magazine of ideas, philosophy and culture. Richard, an editor at Aeon, is open to new pitches. Take a look at this post which shares more details and examples of previously commissioned work. Pay was $550 in the past, though Richard notes in a thread that this has changed recently.
Prism is seeking stories for a series called RESEEDING THE LAND about connections between ecosystem & community health, seeds, seed networks, biodiversity, & food sovereignty. 1500–2000 words and you can pitch ray@prismreports.org. Pitch guidelines here! Pays $0.50/word.
GenderIT is accepting pitches for its upcoming bilingual edition, Power Narratives: Unmasking Digital Stalkers. The deadline for this is March 27th. Lots of information on this page.
Natalie is back at The Lead (UK) and is writing/editing/commissioning for the national publication. They want your pitches and are after brilliantly researched features on environment/education/culture/inequality, always with a focus on the human story. Loads of info in this thread, though rates have not been shared.
Strange Horizons currently publishes: Monthly non-fiction of various kinds, including: Original critical and academic essays, reprints of essays that represent significant contributions to SF criticism, in-depth interviews and in-depth round-table discussions about topics and specific works of interest to Strange Horizons readers. They pay $40-$150 and you can find their submission guide here.
Typebar Magazine is open to pitches. “Right now our interests include, but are not limited to: The mid-late aughts internet, critical reevaluations of cultural artifacts (ephemera or mainstays) from the 90s and aughts, and typewriters. More broadly, we like academic-minded but accessible literary criticism and analysis regardless of genre or era.” Pays $75 an article.
AAWW is looking for Open City pitches, with reported stories that focus on Asian & Muslim communities. “This is the first time we're opening up to places beyond NYC and across the country. Submissions reviewed on a rolling basis. Email pitches to opencity@aaww.org.” Pay ranges from $150-$450 depending on the scope, full rates list here.
Bellingcat is looking for wildlife and environment related pitches grounded in open source methods and tools. Tons of information on this page which covers what Bellingcat is looking for. Specific rates not shared, but does pay a ‘sliding scale payment’ depending on complexity and stage of development.
Leicester Gazette is always accepting pitches, but be sure to check socials for specific callouts. Pitch guidelines here. Pays £0.10/word.
Previous Pitch Calls With Deadlines
The call for pitches for the next Green European Journal print edition is out now. “How do we rethink freedom for an era of far-right politics, deep polarisation, technological revolutions, geopolitical upheaval, and climate breakdown?” Deadline is March 26th. Usually pays 300-350 Euros.
Curationist seek proposals to publish new writing on their platform.
”Curationist’s editorial features critically investigate and contextualize the Works in open access archives. Writers build essays from the histories, narratives, and art of global cultures across time.” The ideal guest writer will have an interest in the history and contemporary context of cultural objects and materials. Pays $1500 with a deadline of March 30th.Sophia is looking for pitches for issue 005 of Digital Frontier Magazine – this one’s theme is OUTLIERS – details all in this thread. “OUTLIERS are the thinkers who raise eyebrows, the builders who innovate on a whim, the subcultures that shape society (without pomp and circumstance) – these are the stories I want to tell in issue 005.” Rates are £0.30/word, deadline is March 31st.
The Winter 2025-26 issue of The Stinging Fly, due to publish in November 2025, will have a special focus on the climate crisis. “We now invite pitches for pieces of creative non-fiction engaging with this topic. Your pitch, which should be submitted through this form, should clearly outline what you wish to write about, how you intend to develop it, and what will make your essay effective, unique or compelling.” Pitches will be accepted until March 31st.
Are you estranged from family? Do you have a story to tell about it? Jenny Bartoy, editor of the anthology NO CONTACT, forthcoming from Catapult (April 2026), is seeking personal essays and flash nonfiction around this topic. Full guidelines here. All contributors will be paid a fee (minimum $50 flash nonfiction / $100 essay). Deadline April 1st.
Call for pitches: prospective Education About Asia authors are invited to submit a 250-word abstract for feature articles, teaching resource essays or multimedia content. Pitches received by May 1, 2025 will be considered for the spring 2026 issue.
Trails Magazine is looking for pitches for Issue 11. The themes are ‘Connection’. Ryan, an editor at Trails, has shared lots of useful pitch information here. Pays $0.50/word minimum. Deadline is some time in May for Issue 11.
Now in its 16th year, the C New Critics Award is designed to help identify, develop, and promote the work of emerging art critics, and to encourage creative discourse on current art practices. Writers are invited to submit an 800-1,000 word review of a recent exhibition, performance, publication, or moving image work, by May 30, 2025. The winner will receive $750, editorial support to prepare their article for publication in a future issue of C Magazine, and a two-year subscription. All participants will receive a one-year subscription.
Open Secrets Magazine is currently accepting submissions of unpublished first person 1,000-2,000 word personal essays written entirely by the author without use of AI and based on the author’s life experience relating to climate change and/or cliimate issues. Deadline: May 31, 2025. Pays $50.
