Design Observer is looking for opinion pieces on the rise of AI image-making. “What does it mean when a machine can replicate Studio Ghibli’s iconic hand-drawn style in seconds? Art, ethics, aesthetics and everything in between.” Pitch details here. UNFURL is a new publication for autistic writers to talk about their special interests and hyperfixations. They’re currently seeking pitches for paid publication. £150.
Late Checkout is a cheat sheet for jet setters and go-getters with a penchant for all things food, drink and travel. “Whether it's the biggest trends in bars and restaurants, curated city guides, design inspiration, shoppable packing lists, or noteworthy cultural moments, Late Checkout is here to make your life a little easier and a lot more enjoyable. A new biennial print and digital magazine targeting majority Women above 25+ who are in a transformative place in their life is looking for pitches. “These women are ambitious and career focused but figuring out what good looks like to them - and so, these stories and pieces will capture real life experiences of how they have moved past that sticky space into being comfortable with themselves. Conz at Business Insider is looking for pitches about twins. Firstly, Conz is looking for a niche essay about someone dating an identical twin and how that feels. Allrecipes.com is putting together “Midwest Salad Week”—a full week devoted to the quirky, colorful, and comforting world of Midwest salads. If your ears perk up at the mention of Jell-O salad, cookie salad, ramen salad, or seven-layer salad, this is for you! We’re looking for pitches that celebrate these retro favorites—think nostalgic recipes, regional deep-dives, interviews with Midwest salad experts, and secrets to building better salads. KRITIQAL has begun accepting a limited number of paid essays. KRITIQAL covers games as political instruments, artistic statements, and cultural objects. Currently looking for pitches, and pays $150 for 1000-2000 words.
Beach.com is searching for freelance pitches focused on beach destinations and coastal getaways across the globe. “We’re looking for writers with a deep love and knowledge of beach destinations, so make sure your pitch offers a unique perspective and expertise.” Pays $250-$300.
For Business Insider, Jess Orwig is looking to publish a few personal essays from people with money-saving tips that have worked. It could be crafty ways you’ve saved on everything from groceries, restaurants, and entertainment to hobbies and travel. Hotels Above Par is looking for freelance writers who have stayed at boutique hotels in one of the destinations in this link. Please pitch only hotels that are either independent or part of a small boutique hotel collection—to be transparent, no mega-resorts, hyper-commercialized stays, or two-star motels. The NBFJA is a coalition of Black-led organizations focused on food sovereignty and land justice. Blackademics supports research and publishes reports on Black farmers’ innovations. Our work is centered in Black food sovereignty and liberation." They are open to pitches and pay $350-$750.
The Wire is a digital news magazine dedicated to understanding and explaining one of the biggest stories of our time: China’s economic rise, and its influence on global business. They are open to pitches, with detailed guidelines here, and pay as much as $1/word.
Cruisebound is a travel agency on a mission to make the joy of cruising available to the masses by simplifying the booking experience. They are looking for freelance travel writers to write for their blog. “If you have a strong voice, a knack for spotting fresh angles, and a passion for helping travelers make smart decisions, we want to hear from you.” Pays $100-$250. Pitch here.
Dispatch is a modern magazine fuelled by frontier spirit. “We publish deeply reported features and curious interviews from across the world. Every Dispatch piece shares two core ideals: a commitment to exploring the world’s peripheries, and a promise to take seriously the people and ideas we find there. In practice, this means we take our time with our reporting, as well as our writing. You'll rarely read more than two articles a week, but they'll always leave an impression.” Paid, but unclear how much.
Contingent is now accepting pitches for their roundtable The Losses, which will examine the way contingent historians and those working outside of academe have been affected by the recent changes in federal funding for historical work. This can include historians who worked (or still work) for the government, or those whose jobs or projects were (or are) supported by federal funding. Excellent work is being done to report on the effects of these cuts and pressure campaigns; this roundtable seeks to give those affected the opportunity to speak, in their own voices, about what this has meant for them as historians, as workers, and as people. Pieces for this roundtable will be 400-500 words; compensation is $150.
FUTBOLISTA Magazine covers The Global Game and is currently looking for submissions. “My intention is to publish a vibrant, informative magazine which uses football as a starting point to also discuss themes like culture, travel, history and more. The seventh edition was described by The i Newspaper as ‘one of the best’ recent sports publications in the United Kingdom.” Only pays £20, but is ran by a final year university student in his spare time.

Call for pitches: prospective Education About Asia authors are invited to submit a 250-word abstract for feature articles, teaching resource essays or multimedia content. Pitches received by May 1, 2025 will be considered for the spring 2026 issue.
Trails Magazine is looking for pitches for Issue 11. The themes are ‘Connection’. Ryan, an editor at Trails, has shared lots of useful pitch information here. Pays $0.50/word minimum. Deadline is some time in May for Issue 11.
Burning Phoenix Press is a small comic press dedicated to bringing the stories of Black women to life. “Black women from all over the world, cis and trans, are welcome to submit no matter their comic experience. We will be accepting seven stories (8-10 pages, black and white or color). The age rating for the comic is 14+. Submissions will be open until May 10th.”
Now in its 16th year, the C New Critics Award is designed to help identify, develop, and promote the work of emerging art critics, and to encourage creative discourse on current art practices. Writers are invited to submit an 800-1,000 word review of a recent exhibition, performance, publication, or moving image work, by May 30, 2025. The winner will receive $750, editorial support to prepare their article for publication in a future issue of C Magazine, and a two-year subscription. All participants will receive a one-year subscription.
Open Secrets Magazine is currently accepting submissions of unpublished first person 1,000-2,000 word personal essays written entirely by the author without use of AI and based on the author’s life experience relating to climate change and/or cliimate issues. Deadline: May 31, 2025. Pays $50.
