Highlights for free subscribers

  • The Offing is an online literary magazine publishing creative writing in all genres and art in all media. They publish work that challenges, experiments, provokes — work that pushes literary and artistic forms and conventions and is a place for new and emerging writers to test their voices, and for established writers to test their limits. Pays $25-$100. Submissions next close on June 30th.

  • The Penguin Michael Joseph Undiscovered Writers' Prize finds new authors from underrepresented backgrounds who they can bring to the widest possible readership. “This year we want something scary! If you’re an aspiring horror author, we want to hear from you. We’re looking for the best horror novels that have a strong hook and even stronger atmosphere.” Closes July 25th.

  • The American Prospect is devoted to promoting informed discourse on public-policy matters from a progressive perspective through narrative interpretation of complex issues. “We don’t just make magazines, we make a difference. The Prospect hosts three classes of interns each year with flexible dates ranging from January to April; May to August; and September to December.” Individual work schedules can be adjusted on a case-by-case basis to reflect candidates' coursework schedules. For Fall 2025 applications, the deadline is July 7th.

  • Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship (Worldwide) is a nine-month fellowship for an early-career journalist to develop an investigative project with Reuters News Agency and Durham University. It includes a monthly salary, stipend, and travel grant. Closes on July 7th.

  • Katherine May’s Wild Rest Resorative Retreat is running 21st - 25th July 2025 in Erth Barton, Cornwall (UK). “Designed with burned-out creatives, leaders and caregivers in mind, this exclusive small-group retreat will help you to rekindle your sense of connection and wonder.”
